On June 16, 2012 my group Los Mojitos performed for a wedding at Hotel Bahia Del Sol on Playa Potrero in the region of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It was the first time that I have played there and I was impressed by the location right on the beach, the friendly staff, nice grounds and excellent restaurants. The hotel has 3 Deluxe rooms with jacuzzi and private patio, 10 Double standard rooms, 4 one-bedroom suites, 10 two-bedroom Suites and a Honeymoon Suite.
It was a small wedding of around 40 Americans, and we played for the whole event. First we played as a duo of piano and bass guitar for the ceremony and cocktail hour. Then during dinner we added our vocalist, drummer and saxophonist and we played some easy listening background music. Then for the reception we played ‘Better Together’ by Jack Johnson for the first dance, followed by Van Morrison’s ‘Have I Told You Lately’ and Louis Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World’ for the father-daughter and mother-son dances.
During the reception we played a bunch of upbeat dance music, including Michael Jackson, Beatles, and latin standards like La Bamba, Guantanamera and Oye Como Va. Our singer also give a quick presentation on how to dance salsa! It was a fun night of dancing and everyone seemed to love the music!
The wedding was well organized by Donna Mickley of Pura Vida Weddings. Donna is originally from New York and specializes in destination weddings in the region of Guanacaste, especially around Tamarindo, Flamingo, Potrero, Playas Del Coco and Papagayo. You can contact her directly at .
